Equipment You’ll Need
To make these rolls, you’ll need:
- Air fryer – For crisp and golden French toast rolls. I used a Tower 11L Air Fryer, it’s my favourite Air Fryer.
- Rolling pin – To flatten the bread slices.
- Mixing bowl – For whisking the egg and milk mixture.
- Toothpicks – Optional, to secure the rolls while cooking.
Why Air Fryers Are Perfect for This Recipe
- Quick and Crispy: The air fryer cooks these rolls to golden perfection in just a few minutes.
- Energy-Efficient: Air fryers heat up faster and use less energy than traditional ovens.
- Perfect for Breakfast: You can cook everything from the sausages to the French toast rolls in one.
Ingredients for 6 Air Fryer Sausage and Bacon French Toast Rolls
- 6 thin sausages (I use Richmond skinless)
- 3 rashers streaky bacon
- 6 slices soft bread (crusts removed if preferred)
- 1 large egg
- 60 ml milk of your choice (¼ cup)
- 6 slices American cheese
- Olive oil spray
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Your favourite sauce, to serve
How to Make Air Fryer Sausage and Bacon French Toast Rolls
Step 1: Preheat the Air Fryer
Preheat your air fryer to 200˚C (400˚F) while you prepare the ingredients.
Step 2: Cook the Sausages and Bacon
Place the sausages in the air fryer and cook for 4 minutes. Then, add the bacon and cook for an additional 6–7 minutes until both are fully cooked. If you like your bacon extra crispy, add it earlier.
Step 3: Flatten the Bread
Using a rolling pin, flatten each slice of bread until it’s thin and pliable.
Step 4: Prepare the Egg Mixture
In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Set aside for dipping later.
Step 5: Assemble the Rolls
Cut each rasher of bacon in half so it’s roughly the same length as the sausages. Place one slice of cheese, half a rasher of bacon, and one cooked sausage at the short edge of a bread slice. Roll it up tightly and secure with a toothpick if needed. Repeat for all six rolls.
Step 6: Coat the Rolls
Spray your air fryer basket or rack with olive oil. Dip each roll into the egg mixture, allowing any excess to drip off. Place the rolls in the air fryer, ensuring they don’t touch, and spray with more oil.
Step 7: Air Fry the Rolls
Cook the rolls for 5–7 minutes until the bread is golden brown and crispy.
Step 8: Serve and Enjoy
Remove the rolls from the air fryer and serve immediately with your favourite sauce. Ketchup, brown sauce, maple syrup, or even barbecue sauce work wonderfully!
Why This Recipe is Perfect for Any Occasion
These air fryer sausage and bacon French toast rolls are perfect for breakfast, brunch, or even a snack. Their combination of crispy bread, savoury bacon, and melty cheese makes them a hit for any occasion.
Plus, they’re great for kids and adults alike, making them a versatile dish for brunches with friends and family or fun weekends.
Tips for the Best French Toast Rolls
- Use Soft Bread: Softer bread rolls more easily and creates a better texture.
- Don’t Overfill: Add just enough filling so the rolls stay tightly sealed and don’t burst in the air fryer.
- Cook in Batches: If your air fryer is small, cook the rolls in batches to ensure even cooking.
- Secure with Toothpicks: If your rolls are not holding together well, use a toothpick to keep them intact while cooking.
- Customize the Fillings: Swap the bacon for turkey bacon, or use cheddar or mozarella instead of American cheese for a different flavour.
Bonus Tip: Make Them Sweet
For a fun variation, replace the bacon and sausage with sliced banana and Nutella. Skip the salt and pepper in the egg mixture and add a sprinkle of cinnamon instead.
Serving Suggestions
These rolls are amazing on their own, but here are a few serving ideas:
- With Syrup: Drizzle maple syrup over the top for a sweet-savoury combo.
- With Fresh Fruit: Add a side of berries for a refreshing contrast.
- With Hash Browns and veggies: Pair with crispy hash browns, cooked mushrooms, onions, and tomatoes for a heartier breakfast.
