Why You’ll Love These Air Fryer Pizza Pockets

If you love pizza but want something fun and a little different, these air fryer pizza pockets are the perfect snack. They’re crispy on the outside, cheesy on the inside, and completely customizable with your favourite fillings.

This recipe is so simple to make, using just a few basic ingredients like bread, pizza sauce, and mozzarella cheese. Plus, it’s featured in my latest book, Fitwaffle’s Easy Air Fryer, which you can find on Amazon!

What Makes This Recipe Special?

These pizza pockets are like mini calzones but quicker and easier to make. You don’t need pizza dough—just soft bread, an air fryer, and your favourite pizza toppings.

The air fryer makes them perfectly golden and crispy in minutes, with none of the mess or fuss of deep frying. They’re great for snacks, parties, or even a quick lunch.

Equipment You’ll Need

To make these pizza pockets, you’ll need:

  • Air fryer – For perfectly crispy pizza pockets in minutes. I used a Tower 11L Air Fryer, it’s my favourite Air Fryer.
  • Pastry brush – To apply the egg wash and seal the edges.
  • Fork – To crimp the edges and ensure they stay sealed.
  • Knife – To cut off the crusts, if desired.

Why Air Fryers Are Perfect for This Recipe

  1. Quick Cooking: Air fryers make these pizza pockets crispy and golden in just 6–7 minutes.
  2. No Oil Needed: No need to crack out the deep fryer to make these crispy!
  3. Easy Cleanup: With minimal mess, air fryers save time on washing up.
  4. Perfect Texture: The air fryer ensures a crispy outer layer while keeping the cheese inside perfectly melted.

Ingredients for Air Fryer Pizza Pockets

  • 3 slices of soft bread
  • 1 ½ tbsp ready-made pizza sauce
  • 30–40 g mozzarella, grated (1.5 oz)
  • 6 slices of pepperoni, cut into pieces (or 1 mini Peperami stick, sliced)
  • 1 small egg + 1 tsp milk or water (for the egg wash)

How to Make Air Fryer Pizza Pockets

Step 1: Preheat the Air Fryer

Set your air fryer to 180˚C (350˚F) to preheat while you prepare the pizza pockets.

Step 2: Prepare the Bread

Cut the crusts off each slice of bread, or leave them on if you prefer. Flatten the center of each slice with your fingers or the back of a spoon, leaving a puffy border around the edge.

Step 3: Add the Pizza Sauce and Fillings

Spread ½ tablespoon of pizza sauce in the center of each slice, avoiding the border. Top with grated mozzarella and sliced pepperoni.

Step 4: Seal the Edges

In a small bowl, beat the egg with 1 teaspoon of milk or water to make the egg wash. Brush it over the border of the bread using a pastry brush.

Fold the bread in half and press the edges together with your fingers. Use the back of a fork to crimp the edges and seal them completely, forming a neat parcel.

Step 5: Add the Egg Wash and Air Fry

Brush the tops of the pizza pockets with more egg wash for a golden finish. Place them in the air fryer and cook for 6–7 minutes, or until crisp and golden brown.

Why These Pizza Pockets Are Perfect for Any Occasion

These air fryer pizza pockets are ideal for just about any occasion. They’re a great snack for kids, a quick lunch, or a party appetizer. Their handheld size and crispy texture make them easy to serve and even easier to eat!

Because they’re so customizable, you can make them to suit anyone’s taste. Try swapping the pepperoni for veggies, ham, or even pineapple for a fun twist.

Tips for the Best Pizza Pockets

  1. Seal the Edges Well: Use a fork to crimp the edges securely so the fillings don’t leak out during cooking.
  2. Don’t Overfill: Adding too much filling can make it hard to seal the pockets and cause them to burst in the air fryer.
  3. Customize the Fillings: Use whatever you have on hand—swap mozzarella for Cheddar or add extra veggies.
  4. Serve Fresh: These pizza pockets are best served warm and fresh out of the air fryer for the crispiest texture.

Serving Suggestions

Serve these pizza pockets with a side of marinara sauce or garlic dip for dunking. They’re also great alongside a fresh salad or some air fryer garlic bread for a complete meal.

For a fun variation, try sprinkling them with Italian herbs or Parmesan cheese before air frying.
