Why You’ll Love These Air Fryer NYC Cookies
If you’re as obsessed with cookies as I am, you’re going to love these air fryer NYC cookies. With their crisp edges, gooey centers, and thick, bakery-style appearance, they’re everything you could want in a cookie.
What makes them even better? They’re made in the air fryer! There’s no need to chill the dough or preheat your oven, and they’re small-batch meaning less cooking time and perfect if you don’t wanna make a full batch of 12 cookies.
What Makes This Recipe Special?
Not only are these cookies ridiculously easy to make, but they’re also made with pantry staples you probably already have at home.
Plus, this recipe is featured in my latest book, Fitwaffle’s Easy Air Fryer, available on Amazon. It’s filled with fun, easy air fryer recipes that will level up your cooking!
Equipment You’ll Need
To make these cookies, you’ll need:
- Air fryer – For perfectly baked cookies without an oven. I used a Tower 11L Air Fryer, it’s my favourite Air Fryer.
- Mixing bowl – To combine the ingredients easily.
- Thick baking paper – To prevent sticking in the air fryer. Thick baking paper is less likely to blow around in your air fryer!
- Kitchen scale – For accurate ingredient measurements.
Why Air Fryers Are Perfect for Baking Cookies
- Quick and Easy: No need to preheat an oven, and the cookies bake in just 8–10 minutes.
- Energy Efficient: Air fryers use less energy than ovens, saving both time and money.
- Perfect Results: The circulating hot air creates crispy edges and gooey centers every time.
- No Chilling Required: You can skip chilling the dough, making this a true “last-minute” recipe.
Ingredients for Air Fryer NYC Cookies
- 60 g unsalted butter, softened (2 oz)
- 80 g light brown sugar (scant ½ cup)
- 20 g granulated sugar (1 tbsp + 1 tsp)
- ½ large egg (see tips)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 170 g plain flour (1½ cups all-purpose flour)
- ½ tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda (baking soda)
- 1 tsp salt
- 140 g chocolate chips or chunks (⅔ cup)
How to Make Air Fryer NYC Cookies
Step 1: Make the Dough
In a large mixing bowl, beat together the butter and both sugars until fully combined. Add the egg and vanilla extract, then beat until creamy and smooth.
Step 2: Mix in the Dry Ingredients
Add the flour, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, and salt. Use a wooden spoon or rubber spatula to fold the mixture until it’s almost combined, you can also use your hands if easier. Then fold in the chocolate chips or chunks until the dough comes together with no streaks of flour.
Step 3: Preheat the Air Fryer
Set your air fryer to 160˚C (325˚F) while you shape the cookies.
Step 4: Shape the Cookies
Divide the dough into 5 equal portions, about 100 g (3.5 oz) each. Squeeze each portion into a ball and roll it gently between your palms.
Step 5: Prepare the Air Fryer
Place a sheet of thick baking paper in the air fryer basket and weigh down the edges to prevent it from blowing around. You can do this with small blobs of the cookie dough or oven-proof clips. Space the cookie dough balls about 7.5 cm (3 in) apart on the paper.
Step 6: Bake the Cookies
Bake the cookies for 8–10 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown. They may look slightly underbaked in the center, but they’ll firm up as they cool.
Step 7: Cool and Enjoy
Let the cookies cool in the air fryer for at least 10 minutes before moving them. This helps them set properly and keeps them from falling apart.
Why These Cookies Are Perfect for Any Occasion
These air fryer NYC cookies are perfect for any time you fancy something sweet. They’re quick enough to make on a weekday afternoon but indulgent enough for special occasions.
Whether you’re sharing them with friends or enjoying them all to yourself, these cookies are sure to impress.
Tips for the Best NYC Cookies
- Measure Accurately: Use a kitchen scale to ensure the right ratios for perfect results.
- Don’t Overmix: Overmixing can make the cookies tough, so fold gently until just combined.
- No Overcrowding: Leave enough space between the cookies in the air fryer to allow them to spread.
- Reheat for Freshness: If you’re eating them the next day, pop them in the air fryer for 2–3 minutes at 150˚C (300˚F) to refresh them.
As this recipe is small-batch, it only requires half an egg.
Serving Suggestions
These cookies are amazing on their own, but here are a few ways to take them to the next level:
- With Ice Cream and sauce: Serve them warm with a scoop of your favourite ice cream and a drizzle of chocolate or caramel sauce for an extra indulgent dessert.
- Dipped in Milk: A classic combo that never disappoints.
- With Tea or Coffee: Perfect for a cozy afternoon snack.
